 Book: The Artist’s Way

If you are a creative person looking for support, The Artist’s Way is an incredible resource. It’s chock full of amazing tools, such as “anger is your friend, it’s not a very nice friend, but it’s a very loyal one.” And “how to deal with toxic people.”

I have done the program three different times, each in a different way. It’s a bit of a choose your own adventure experience. And I still make a point of doing Morning Pages (3 pages each day in handwriting of just whatever is on your mind) and taking Artist Dates (taking your inner child out for a fun outing).

Book: Time Cure

This book was a game-changer for me. I talk about it in the play. Essentially, the author has discovered that recovery from trauma is directly related to the story you tell yourself and about yourself. When you think about your past, are you a victim or someone who overcame obstacles? When you think about your fututre, are you hopeful or afraid? And when you think about today, do you think about what you did wrong or so you ask yourself, “what did I do today that only I could have done?”

The approach laid out here has been shown to reduce or eliminate PTSD from soldiers within two weeks. As an example, if a young man is suffering because his best friend was killed by and EID, he will have that young man go back to that terrible memory and then make a point of thinking aobut the good times he had with that friend – playing cards, laughing, etc. Over time, the bad memory is paired with a good one, which reduces the traumatic impact of the bad memory.

Book: The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity

This book also has a bit of a religious bent to it, which you can ignore and interpret as you please. I use this book daily for affirmations about prosperity. There are dozens of ideas (in all caps type) throughout the book. Each day, I repeat three of these out loud, 15 times each. I have the pages with the affirmations dog-eared so I can find them easily.

As I say in my show, North Star, your mind is like a giant file cabinet. Whatever you hear, it believes as true, even if you don’t believe it.  If you have 1000 messages saying, “you’re worthless,” all you have to do is say “I am worthy” to yourself 1001 times and it will reset the  operating system of your beliefs.

I use this book as a way to replace some old ideas that don’t work for me!

Brene Brown’s: The Power of Vulnerability TED Talk.

The authority on courage and vulnerability. Her whip-smart usassailable facts are combined with homespun honest anecdontes that have illuminated key ideas and continue to inspire me.

Hardship into Happiness: Leveraging Your Laziness

Released in June 2021 as part of my series Turning Hardship into Happiness, this installment is all about Leveraging Your Laziness. That’s right. Use your inertia and desire to get back to you lounging to get things done! It can happen. There was an aricle in the NY Times that the feeling of lethargy can often be a precursor to anxiety or depression.

What would you say to holding hands and walking through this together? My cats say, “yay.” Alos, they would like more treats. Here’s to making it through and looking forward to good times ahead!

Book: Feeling Good: The New Mood

I was prescribed this book when I was diagnosied with depression. The author has an 80% recovery rate for even his most severe patients when using this approach in combination with therapy and medication. For those of you afraid of medication, here’s what to know. Depression or anxiety re-sets the chemical levels (adrenaline, etc.) in your body. As your body experiences this embalence, your mind will search for things to justify it. The body feels depressed or anxious physcially, your mind will look for things to make sense of that emotion.

One thing I really like about this book is the authentic tone of the author. As I was first reading it, I was thinking “this is nonsense and won’t work.” That got my interest.

Even if you are not depressed, i would suggest you give this book a look. It’s got all kinds of exellent, short checklists and tools to help you untangle your thinking.

I have given this book as a gift more times than I can remember!

 Mindvalley Meditation

I am NOT good at meditating where you just breathe and don’t think. I do better when someone is guiding me. This website has a TON of resources for guided meditations on every topic from abundance to healing old wounds.  My favorites are

Duality by Jeffrey Allen •  Love or Above by Christie Marie Sheldon

 • Money EQ by Ken Honda

Just follow your intuition on what feels right for you. Again, there are tons of free things on the site. And the way that I look at it, every minute I spend listening to a meditation is a minute I’m not spending time in my mind (which can sometimes be a dangerous neighborhood).

 Book: The Game of Life

The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn – a healer from the 1930s and 40’s!  She has a religious tone to her work, but if that’s not your thing, just look at it as “The Universe” or whatever you believe it. She talks a lot about the power of affirmations. One

lesson I particularly enjoy is the idea of “signs of land.”  Often when we go to achieve our goals, we’ll get a much smaller, less impressive version of our goal along the way. It’s easy to be disappointed at that moment. She talks about a client who wanted to manifest a set of dishes, but was given a chipped teacup from a friend. “It’s a sign of land!” says Florence. Before a ship hits land, the crew will start to see twigs in the water or birds. Those small things indicate that you are going in the right direction – a sign of land.

Daily Meditations

There are two meditations that I do each day. It’s all about bringing in white light. I find this very soothing because it lets me focus on bringing in good things and letting go of worry.

Yoga with Adriene

If yoga feels like a chore vs. fun, may I suggest Yoga with Adrienne. There are tons of easy videos, and Adrienne is super chill. She also has an adorable dog, Benji, who joins in the fun. FREE resource!

  Sound Healing

Did you know that listening to sounds at certain vibrations can help calm and heal your body? It’s true!  If nothing else, it will make you feel calmer and happier.

I listen to this one each day.
